Race After 1977 is a game about racing in a post-apocalyptic world. Think Mad Max, but taking place in the 70’s. There’s really nothing about the game that screams 70’s, except of course the title. Racing across the charred landscape of a destroyed world can be a lot of fun, but it’s a crowded genre to be sure. Does Race After 1977 have what it takes to survive? Race After 1977 puts you into a post-apocalyptic world where people are racing to find the last hospitable place on Earth. The tournament winner will be given the GPS coordinates to this supposed paradise. It’s a threadbare plot, but is enough to get you into the game and working your way through the 5 different circuits. You can quick race if you just want a one run game, but the meat is in the story mode where you’ll race different tracks and need to place high enough in order to move on.
Back in late August, Deceased Pixel announced Super Mega Worm [99¢], a game inspired by the flash game Effing Worms that was itself inspired by the original worm havoc game Death Worm by JTR. Literally the next day, developer Playcreek announced that they were working on an official version of Death Worm in conjunction with JTR for the iPhone and iPad. The battle for worm game supremacy was now in full swing, but Super Mega Worm was first to market as it launched in the App Store just a couple of days following its announcement. We liked Super Mega Worm in our review, and most of our complaints with the game have since been fixed via updates, but we were still anxious to get our hands on Playcreek's take on the game with Death Worm [99¢].
The game has since wiggled its way into the App Store this past weekend. Death Worm features sharp Retina Display graphics, three different environments to cause destruction in, a fairly deep upgrade system for your worm, and even a mini-game to break up the core gameplay. The question I keep seeing asked in our forums is which game is better – Death Worm or Super Mega Worm? Honestly, it's a toss up, and will likely depend on personal preference which one you end up enjoying more as they both have their own sets of strengths and weaknesses.
In Death Worm you'll control your worm using a virtual stick, which works really well but is also the only option. There are two special moves your worm can perform which are enabled by collecting icons dropped from defeated enemies. One allows you to move with increased speed and strength for a period of time, and the other is a fireball that can be shot from your mouth. These special moves, along with your more basic attributes like speed and size, can be upgraded as you progressively destroy more and more enemies. The upgrading aspect is fantastic, giving Death Worm a slight RPG feel as you choose what areas to improve your worm in.
Another nice touch in Death Worm are the three different environments to play in that all have their own independent save states, essentially allowing you to have three games in progress at once. Each environment has 15 levels to play through with certain requirements that must be met to pass each one. This is the part of Death Worm that I absolutely did not like, as sometimes the requirements can be downright frustrating. For example, there are levels where you must kill a certain amount of enemies without taking damage of any kind. With one enemy left before passing a level, a single bullet from a soldier's pea shooter will reset the quota, forcing you to start over again. I've literally been stuck at points like this for dozens of retries, and the game gets difficult enough in the later levels that there isn't a need for such a cheap requirement.
Marvel KAPOW! by Smith & Tinker, Inc. is an action-packed game filled with all the Marvel characters that we know and love. These superheroes come together in a fight to save the world from their rival villains. With authentic comic book graphics, superhero music, and fast-paced gameplay, Marvel KAPOW! is definitely a hit.
Upon opening the app, the title screen pulls you in immediately. Next, you choose your path. There are two modes: normal and arcade. Normal mode allows you to progress at a good pace through all 26 levels—three of which are boss levels. Arcade mode gives you all four weapons and requires that you face all four villains. This challenges you to last longer and longer each time.
Gameplay is similar to that of Fruit Ninja. You must use your finger to attack the approaching enemies as quickly as possible. Whether you’re Wolverine trying to slash Magneto to bits, or Spider-Man dissolving Venom with your web, you won’t want to take your finger off the screen. The other two heroes whose abilities you can utilize are Captain America, who reflects Red Skull’s lasers back at him, and Thor, who smashes Loki with Mjölnir.
If you’re a Marvel fan, you’ll enjoy the comic book dialog between levels and love fighting super villains with your favorite superpowers.
Marvel KAPOW! is non-stop heroics and action. It has a permanent place on my iPhone as I haven’t been able to put it down since I started playing. Definitely give this one a shot, you won’t be disappointed. It’s SUPER fun (yeah, I went there)!
Eons before the Green Lantern Corps, the Guardians of the Universe created an android race of interstellar police—the Manhunters. When corrupted programming made them punish all life, the Manhunters were exiled. Now they’ve returned, seeking vengeance. As gifted but cocky test pilot Hal Jordan and armed with a power ring charged by will, you are the newest recruit in the Corps, assigned to preserve peace and ensure justice.
Today is the last day of E3 2011. While the show has been going on, iOS games that everyone has been going nuts over took a backseat to home consoles and the PlayStation Vita. That still didn’t stop PopCap from releasing a major update for Plants vs. Zombies on iOS today. The game is now running on version 1.6 and it includes new modes and achievements.
The Zen Garden is the first notable addition to PvZ on iOS. While in the Zen Garden, you can grow plants from the game. Every time you water, feed, or play them music, the plants will give you coins that you can spend in Crazy Dave’s shop (also known as his car).
Crazy Dave is so crazy, he’ll give you 10,000 coins just so you can buy the first new minigame in PvZ called Zombotany. In this mode, the zombies will have the heads of plants. It makes you change your strategy because not only do you have to defend against munching zombies, but you also have to prepare for zombies that shoot peas. PopCap has turned your own powers against you in this mode. There are a couple other minigames such as Zombiquarium and It’s Raining Seeds, but they cost $50,000 coins each.
It's pretty clear the first time you load up Delusion Studio's House of Mice, that one of the developers is a big fan of Hanna-Barbera cartoons. It's not just because you're playing as a group of mice hell-bent on destroying a cat, it's also because the game features some of the slickest animation you'll find in a puzzle game.
Unless you've never booted up the App Store in your entire life, you're going to recognize House of Mice right away. It's a one-screen puzzle game that requires you to get from one point to another while grabbing onto three tasty pieces of cheese. The game certainly looks the part of Cut the Rope or its countless iterations, but the gameplay takes a different, albeit familiar approach.
House of Mice is essentially billiards with mice that turn into bombs. To complete a stage, you need to flick one of three mice through a set of obstacles and into a cat that bears a striking resemblance to the Cheshire Cat from Alice in Wonderland. Along the way you'll want to pick up pieces of cheese to improve your score, but if you're struggling with a particular level, killing the cat will suffice.
After weeks of anticipation, iH8sn0w has announced iFaith, the SHSH dumper. iFaith will allow users to dump the SHSH of the current firmware on the device, even if Apple is not signing. For example, if your device is on 4.0 and you want the blobs, you can use this program to rip, or dump the blobs from the device.
It is important to note that this only works if your device is susceptible to the Limera1n jailbreak (everything but iPad 2). The iPod Touch 2G and iPhone 3G are also not compatible simply because there is no need for them (latest firmware is always jailbreakable). In short, iFaith allows you to:
● Dumps SHSH Blobs
● Build *signed* IPSW with dumped SHSH blobs
● Submits dumped SHSH blobs to remote server for backup.
iFaith will be released within the hour for Windows. Mac version will be out in a few weeks. The device does not have to be jailbroken, but does have to be on the firmware of the blob you want to dump.
You can download iFaith here.
If the downloaded file is in .zip format, rename its extension to .ipa
