iOS Bullying: No Support for the 3Gs on iOS 5 Forces Users To Upgrade to iPhone 5, iPhone 4? Posted: 25 May 2011 10:35 AM PDT
A fresh rumor suggesting that the new iOS 5 will not support the iPhone 3Gs begins to corroborate the theory that the iPhone 5 (or iPhone 4s) in 2011 will be aimed at getting old-school 3Gs users to upgrade. Are you one of them? Way back in the day when I knew no better, I was a young boy using Microsoft Windows. First, I had become a master of Dos Shell, then I learned to wield Windows 3.0. I felt like I was on the vanguard of home computing technology, until one day I went to the now defunct Egghead Software and bought a brand-new PC game, only to discover that it worked on Windows 3.1. This was my first experience in getting squeezed by Bill Gates. Was it possible that my Dad would plunk down the change to upgrade to 3.1 so that I could play a new crop of video games on my computer? Fat chance. According to a new somewhat iPhone 5-related rumor, iOS 5 will not feature compatibility with the ‘ol iPhone 3Gs. According to MacRumors, they picked this nugget of information up via “Eldar Murtazin, editor-in-chief of Russian mobile phone blog Mobile-Review,” a guy who has “a very solid reputation in the mobile phone rumor community.” While the rumor remains unconfirmed, the unveiling of iOS 5 shortly will reveal whether it is true or not. But given the very common practice in the consumer electronics market to squeeze users into buying upgraded tech goods, there is a very good chance that this will be the case, especially since we already have seen iPhone 3G updates for iOS 4 get phased out this year. So, how does this rumor fit into the iPhone 5 discussion? Simple: the move supports a popular theory that the next iPhone — whether it is called the iPhone 5 or iPhone 4s — will be targeted mostly at getting 3G and 3Gs users to re-up on their love of the iPhone. Since there seems to be a suggestion that the form factor, 4G’ness, and other features on the next iPhone won’t be necessarily mind-blowing, there is a better chance that iOS 5 itself will be extremely cool — something that sets its graphic user display well-apart from iOS 4, for example. Whatever iOS 5 reveals, it stands to reason that it will be attractive enough to make 3G and 3Gs users exclaim I want that! Well, you’re not going to get it unless you plunk down your change for the iPhone 5. It’s a savvy business tactic on the part of Apple to ensure that the 3G and 3Gs finally go the way of the dodo. So, for all you 3G and 3Gs users out there who already didn’t have enough reason to invest in the iPhone 5, now you may have yet another. Know people who have an iPhone 3G or 3Gs? Feel free to post this to Facebook or Twitter for them to read. It really helps us to get our stories out there. Thanks! |
